This is a 20" by 16" inch acrylic painting on back-stapled canvas. This self-portrait is a deeply personal exploration of identity and chronic illness, inspired by the iconic style of Frida Kahlo. Through this piece, I reflect on my journey with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a condition I was diagnosed with at 16. The zebra, prominently featured in the composition, symbolizes the condition, as it is the recognized mascot for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.Subtle yet powerful medical symbols are woven throughout the painting, representing how this illness is inextricably tied to my life and experience. The piece is not only a representation of struggle but also of resilience, self-awareness, and the complexity of living with an invisible condition. This painting serves as both a personal narrative and a visual tribute to others navigating similar journeys, blending artistic expression with advocacy and awareness.
